I took a solo walk today without my AirPods on. It felt.. strange. So strange.
Iām used to always having input: while walking, while biking, while gymming, while cooking, while showering, while basically doing anything where I donāt have to think hard or talk to people.
My addiction to constant input was so severe at one point, that even music couldnāt do it ā Iād always, always, ALWAYS be plugged into a podcast or YouTube video.
But with so much input, how could I possibly really listen?
Blaise Pascal said: āAll of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.ā
And itās true. Often, external noise is just that ā noise ā distraction disguised as entertainment/productivity, going in one ear and out the other.
I used to fear meditation. Sitting alone with my thoughts was paralyzing, and Iād rather do anything else. And why is there constant music playing in my head?!
But staying there is the whole point.
Itās to sit, walk, cook, shower, eat, gym, whatever, in silence. Not all the time (unless youāre a monk) ā just for, say, 10 minutes.
Weave through unclosed thought loops and come to new conclusions. String two and two together to breed a new idea. Or think random things that make no sense ā and not judge ourselves one bit.
If weāre seeking an answer, it may very well already lie within us.
Epiphanies come from stillness. Creativity is born out of boredom. And satisfaction is actually just presence.
We donāt need input all the time. Sometimes we just need to process, and let our minds work their magic.
Cheers!
